Privacy policy

ReviewIt is a private, invite-only site where a small group of friends review films, television, games, books and music. It is run by one person as a personal project. It is not a business, it carries no advertising, and it makes no money.

What is stored about you

When you sign in with Google, the site receives and stores:

• your name, email address and profile picture from your Google account
• the tokens Google issues so that the site can keep you signed in
• a session record for each sign-in, which includes your IP address and the browser you used

As you use the site it also stores:

• the reviews and ratings you write, and whether you marked one as containing spoilers
• which film, show, game or book each review is about
• if you invite someone, the email address you enter. That address is stored before that person has ever visited the site, so please only invite people who are happy to be invited

Who can see it

Every page other than this one, the terms, and the sign-in page requires an account, and accounts can only be created by invitation. Your name, picture, ratings and reviews are visible to the other members. Nothing is public, and nothing is shared or sold to anyone outside the group.

There is no tracking

No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels, and no third-party cookies. The only cookie set is the one that keeps you signed in, and it is required for the site to work at all.

Services used to run the site

• Google handles sign-in and receives nothing back from the site beyond the fact that you signed in.
• Vercel hosts the site and processes requests to it.
• Neon stores the database, on servers in the United States.
• OMDb, RAWG and Google Books supply titles and cover art. When you search, the words you type are sent from the site's server to those services. Your IP address is not.

One thing worth knowing: cover images are loaded straight from those services rather than copied onto this site, so when a page of covers loads, your browser contacts m.media-amazon.com, media.rawg.io and books.google.com directly. Those services can therefore see your IP address.

Deleting your data

Ask and your account will be deleted. Removing your account also removes your reviews, ratings and sessions, because they are linked to it and deleted along with it. You can also ask for a copy of everything stored about you.

How long it is kept

Your account and reviews are kept until you ask for them to be removed or the site is shut down. Sessions expire on their own.
